We�re changing the name of our company!

During the last month or two, we�ve had the pleasure of talking to countless New Yorkers in regards to the excitement and challenges of life from the city. We�ve met with painters moving into their art studios and bathing inside their sink to spend less; young architects who reconnected using inner-child and created forts made from bedding to split their loft into separate rooms. One common thread within our conversations has been the inherently emotional nature of moving. A whole new job, a budding relationship, a separation. Usually moving is precipitated with a memorable life event.

Our company brings more humanity and fairness towards the NYC rental market. As New Yorkers, the world thinks a strong communal feeling and camaraderie. Our business model is peer-to-peer: every renter who chooses to list their home with the company helps fellow apartment seekers by making moving cheaper, friendly, and transparent. Concretely, renters who're moving out can earn a reasonable finder�s fee for introducing their landlord to another qualified renter, which comes down to thousands of dollars in savings for apartment seekers. With this community-driven approach in your mind, we�ve chose to rebrand our team with a name that better captures our values.

Enter Joinery. �The methods or techniques employed to connect pieces of wood together.�

Joinery will be the art and craft of an joiner, someone who brings function and artisanship with a home by building its wooden stairs, doors, window frames, cabinets, bookcases. The pictures and language generated in your mind by joinery struck a chord here: we liked thinking about renters banding together to make a less costly and sensible system of renting.

The rental market is doing little to help remedy our anxiety whenever we move apartments. Over half of renters in NYC are paying 30% or even more of these total household income on rent. Many renters have explicitly �opted-out� of employing real-estate brokers, either beyond financial necessity or from principle. The general consensus among renters would be that the 15% fee charged by brokers?-?typically $5,600!?-?is entirely misaligned using the service provided. To avoid paying this fee, we have to make our way by having a labyrinth of lease-breaks, roommates, and allegedly no-fee apartments.
